Welcome to the website of G.S.S.V. Tjas, the world’s largest student speedskating society! Experiencing life in the Netherlands isn’t complete without experiencing speedskating. Tjas offers speedskating practice for everyone, from beginners to advanced skaters. Below, you can find relevant information about becoming a member. G.S.S.V. Tjas is the Groningen Student Ice Skating Society founded in 1968. Being a member of Tjas allows you to practice your speed skating skills at the Kardinge ice skating rink twice a week throughout the winter season. Under the guidance of trainers you learn how to improve your skating skills. Tjas also organises skating competitions during the winter season. With Tjas, training continues throughout the summer. Cycling, running, and off ice related practices are offered throughout the summer season. Cycling and running matches are also organised during the summer. We are a Dutch student organization which means our main activities are in Dutch. However, we have a buddy system which implies that we have people that are very happy in helping you with translating trainings or telling you what Tjas is all about.

During winter season 2017-2018 the ice skating hours are as follows:

Hours typed in red are only for advanced skaters with licence. The ice track is open from 7 oktober until 26 march. The ice track is located at Kardinge, the adresss is: Kardingerplein 1, 9735 AA Groningen
In the winter you can train on your own level in three different kind of traininggroups.
You can skate 2 times a week on the Tjas training hours on Monday (17.00-18.00) and Thursday (17.45-18.45). You will be sorted by your own speed skating level and our trainers will learn you the correct technique so you will learn how to speed skate.
If you are a more experienced speed skater you can join the traininggroups. You have mastered the speed skating technique pretty well and you can train at a higher level. The goal is to fine-tune your technique, work on your stamina to improve your overall speed.
If you are a more experienced speed skater and also want to start speed skating matches you can join the fast groups. The fast groups train 4 times a week (2 times extra on Wednesday (16.30-18.00 and Sunday (21.00-22.00). You will follow a special training schedule so you will be faster each match you start. A side note with this training is that your membership is more expensive. For two more weekly training hours, you pay an additional € 180 a year.
Speed skating competition:
To see how much the training pays off Tjas organises 3 ice skating club matches. The goals are to beat the other members from your group ore beat your personal best. Our matches are open for all skill levels and you can choose which distances you want to start. This can be a distance between 100 meters and 5.000 meters. Besides our own competition other sister student speed skating clubs also organise their own speed skating matches which are organised throughout the whole country.
The summer season is from the third week of april untill the second week of October. So when the speed skating season ends and the ice rink closes Tjas continues! You can keep training whole summer at Tjas. We Cycle and train off-ice.
Each Wednesday we have a cycling training. The training groups vary from beginner to advanced.
So you can train on your own level. At the beginning of each summer season we offer an cycling beginners course. To compare your cycling skills we organise time trials within Tjas to see how fast you are
During the off-ice trainings on Monday and Thursday you can work on your power and skating technique. The exercises vary a lot to ensure all your muscles are being trained so you can start the speed skating season in shape. The off-ice trainings are also perfect preparation for our internal running competition and batavierenrace!
Tjas also has a lot of activities besides sporting. Each Thursday we have a few drinks in our pub, Café De Walrus, located at Pelsterstraat 25. We organize derverse activities, such as 6 big parties and a grand themed ball. These activities are organised by one of our committees, who organise activities like our annual trip to Collalbo (Italy) for a week of speed skating, skiing and partying.
For the freshman our introduction committee (IntroCie) organises the introduction period so you can get to know Tjas and other members of Tjas. The highlight of the introduction period is the introduction camp on the island Schiermonnikoog in the weekend of 29-30 September and 1st of October. We hope you enjoy our organisation at the fullest!
