About Tjas

Skating

As a member of Tjas you can skate the whole year for € 33, - twice a week. Under the guidance of experienced trainers who help you to improve your technique. Because you will also build up speed, there are four times a year club competitions.

The members of Tjas can be divided into recreational and racers. The last group is in possession of a license and can ride KNSB-competitions. The recreationists can train on Monday and Thursday, led by an experienced skater. This is done in groups of ascending level: From group 1 to group 8 beginning skaters to the advanced. Racers can train 3 evenings a week, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. They train in three groups of different levels.  Recreational players can participate in the inter-university tournaments of other students speedskating associations.

 

Tjas in the summer

In summer you can also train with Tjas. There are cycling, running and rollerskating  training. Every Sunday there is a group Tjassers going for "apple pie cycling".  There are also cycling and running competitions in the summer, there is a battle for the trophy.

 

More than just skating

Not only athletic performance in Tjas important, the atmosphere is also important. 2 times a month there is a drink in the Café de Walrus, and there are throughout the year the necessary parties.

At the beginning of the season there is an intro to Schiermonnikoog camp, and the travel committee organizes an annual winter trip and a cycling weekend in the Ardennes.

 

History of G.S.S.V. Tjas

On the initiative of Henk Lukkien and Gerrit Kragt was G.S.S.V. Tjas established on March 6, 1968. Since then much has changed. In the beginning they skated in Heerenveen. Tjas was back then only for recreation.  Nowadays Tjas for over 80% of recreationists, the other 20% trains for races.

The name "Tjas" is an initiative of Simone Kragt. Tjas-olmai is one of the many gods who honor the Lapps. The name stands for "Aquarius" and the God took care of the lakes and fishing.

 

Tjaditions

Forty years is long enough to build some traditions, the Tjaditions. There is at the beginning of each new academic year at an introductory weekend Schiermonnikoog. This weekend is the sign of the 3 T's: Toxbar, Toasted sandwiches and Training. Also an annual event is the Tjastournament. On the ice of Kardinge this annual inter-university tournament a great success.

In addition, to ensure that the effects of Tjastrainingen can be used, for all Tjassers there are a number of club competitions and 100m competitions.

After the skating season traditionally follows a rest period (one week) and then the dry training at the ACLO begins. Twice a week there is a running with it attention to skating-related exercises. There is also trained for the large student Relay Walk The Bataviansrace. The runningcommittee organizes competitions throughout the year.

On Wednesday evening there is cycling. We start from the beginning of the Bike Centre at Bedumerweg Thick (bike shop). On Sunday there is Apple pie cycling training, intended for those who do not want to override, stands for fun and apple pie. Furthermore, for cycling enthusiasts a bike weekend and several trials are organized.

Every second and fourth Thursday of the month there are Tjasborrels in the Café the Walrus, Pelsterstraat 25. Discussions: exciting skating, cycling and walking stories and Tjasrelaties. And of course there once in a while party’s  in various fun themes which take place in the Café Walrus. To initiate the summer (= 'do nothing' for most Tjassers) is late June / early July barbecue.

 

The Tjassus

The magazine of Tjas is the Tjassus. It contains important notices, a calendar of events, announcements of committees and written about the different Tjasactivities. The Tjassus is published six times per year and is a source of amusement.

 

The ACLO-sports card

Welcome to  G.S.S.V. Tjas,  one of the 49 sports clubs affiliated with the ACLO. After you’ve paid contribution to  your sports club you’re almost

ready to play sports. To officially be allowed to play sports you also need an ACLO-sports card.  A fee has to be paid when playing sports without an

ACLO-sports card. Therefore it is very important to buy the ACLO-sports card as soon as possible!

The costs for an ACLO-sports card are only €52,- and the ACLO-sports card will be valid  for one academic year.  There are two ways  you can buy an

ACLO-sports card:

- At the Information desk of the Sports Centre.

- By iDeal on our website (www.aclosport.nl/en), only possible with a

Dutch bank account.

Right after you paid for  your ACLO-sports card you can play sports. Make

sure to always bring your  student card, because  your student card  is  your

ACLO-sports card.

With the ACLO-sports card, you can also play other sports besides that of

your sports club. A good way to stay fit during the winter or summer break!
